Fox 14 Your Morning News: Extreme heat at Angola Prison

Published

SUMMARY: Activists are seeking a temporary restraining order to halt the Louisiana State Penitentiary's farm line during extreme heat, arguing it constitutes cruel and unusual punishment. Inmates at Angola, including former prisoner Ronald Marshall, describe being forced to handpick crops without proper equipment under harsh conditions. Marshall explained that wearing soaked sweaters was a makeshift way to cool off. Judge Jackson, overseeing the case, was presented with proposals to cease farm work when temperatures exceed 88°F. Advocates plan to bring more witnesses to testify on the inhumane conditions, asserting that it violates the Eighth Amendment. Public opinion is being solicited via a QR code survey.

SUMMARY: Thursday will see more clouds and better rain chances, potentially keeping temperatures in the 80s and avoiding a heat index of 108, which triggers a heat advisory. However, this relief is short-lived as rain chances diminish by Friday. Over the weekend and into next week, an upper High will build, causing temperatures to soar. For the latest updates, download the WWL app. I'm chief meteorologist Chris Franklin.

HONEY HOLE INSIDER: 6/28/24

SUMMARY: I'm David Owens with the Honey Hole Insider. It's hot out, so ensure you have sun protection, but the fish are still biting. For summertime bass fishing, start with topwater early, then switch to deep crankbaits. Using specialized equipment like a Revo winch with a Veritos winch rod optimizes your experience. Good crankbaits include the Berkeley Dredger and Berkeley Dime. Crappie fishing is fair to good in shallow flats due to low deep-water oxygen. Brim and catfishing are also productive. Visit Honey Hole for all your fishing gear needs this summer. Have a great day!
