Grand Avenue Gym: DeQuincy landmark fading fast, group fighting to save it says – American Press
SUMMARY: The Grand Avenue Gym in DeQuincy, a historic landmark for the Black community, faces potential demolition due to neglect and hurricane damage. An alumni association is striving to preserve the building, blaming the city for not securing it from vagrants or using FEMA funds for repairs. The gym, with historical ties to the Rosenwald Schools and community activities, has deteriorated severely. The city argues against donating the property due to legal restrictions but remains open to its sale. The alumni association seeks ownership to apply for grants and refurbish the gym, hoping to restore its community significance.
