Safe Sitter classes teach pre-teens how to handle emergencies while babysitting
SUMMARY: The West Kashu Cameron Hospital is providing babysitting classes this summer for pre-teens aged 11 to 13, as well as those who've completed 6th to 8th grade. Christa O'Neal from the hospital highlighted the classes' focus on safety, weather safety, injury management, first aid, CPR, and behavior management. The one-day course from 8:30 AM to 3:00 PM includes hands-on activities and business skills like handling money and job screening. Courses are available in Sulfur and Dynamic Dimensions, with sessions on July 10th and 16th. Registration is via the hospital's website under the community events calendar.
Babysitting a sibling or child is a big responsibility and the West Calcasieu Cameron Hospital is helping prepare teens for what they need to do in case of an emergency while babysitting. We spoke with Christa O'Neal this morning to get the details.

Watermelon festival returns
SUMMARY: The Daniel Board Watermelon Festival offers family fun with events like mutton busting, seed spitting, pig scrambles, and a mullet contest. The festival celebrates the history of Sugar Town watermelon and attracts visitors from various cities. Highlights included a watermelon seed spitting contest with a winning distance of 29.5 feet, a watermelon eating contest, livestock shows, vendors, and rides. Additionally, the St. Nicholas Center hosted a magic show, supporting individuals with autism by providing therapy and family support. Meanwhile, the City of Lake Charles continued its Art in the Park series, offering children creative outdoor activities.

Local organization gives free books to the community
SUMMARY: Read Free Louisiana is a nonprofit aiming to improve literacy rates by distributing free books, especially in response to Louisiana's low literacy levels, where 50.4% of young children read below their grade level. Founded by Ryan Abshire in 2020 during the lockdown, the organization provides books, primarily to children, through donations, thrift store finds, and book sales. The initiative also promotes a sense of community and ownership among children. Since its inception, Read Free Louisiana has distributed around 12,000 books. City teams up to host Art in the Park
